A film depicting the history of Wonthaggi's coal mines will nationally on the ABC on Thursday, September 26, at 9:30pm. Called 'Black Gold, Kindred Spirits', it is a story of injustice, comradeship and community spirit. The film traces the local industry, which was considered one of Australia's most dangerous work places, and its strongest union. Faced with appalling conditions and labelled The Reds, for fighting back, this small and isolated community transformed working conditions for all Australians. Jeff Bird directed and produced the film. Mr.Bird, whose work was helped by the former Wonthaggi Borough, said the film involved human struggle and triumph. It was not about political causes. |
